Picking Primers

A guest post written by Aliyah M.

Makeup is complicated. There’s hundreds of different kinds of foundation, primers, mascaras, eyeliners and everything else that you put on your face. Trying to choose just one can be extremely hard.

Especially when everyone swears by the most expensive brand out there and you’re a broke college kid.

Sometimes the better way to choose instead of going by brand is by formula. If you know oils make you break out and the only thing the name brand carries is oils, then you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank for something that is only going to make your skin angry.

We were recently given three different kinds of primers to try out; Mac skin base, AM Advanced Mineral Makeup moisturizing primer and Neat selfie magic facial oil and makeup primer.

The Mac primer would probably be considered a cream. It comes in Mac’s classic plain black bottle with only the name on it. The pump action dispenser wasn’t my favorite. It doesn’t come out well and is a little clumpy. When it did decide to come out, it flew out at warp speed.

It was also a little glittery which I wasn’t expecting. You couldn’t see it under the makeup, though. After wearing my makeup for about 10 hours, I noticed that makeup wasn’t collecting in the creases of my face like with my regular primer, which is a gel.

The Neat facial oil is, obviously, an oil. I was a little apprehensive about this one because my skin tends to be on the oily side so putting oil on my face is a bit of a no-no.

I tried some just on my hand and it rings true to regular oils. It made my hands feel greasy, but it smells really good because there is lemongrass in it. Once I rubbed it in though, and let it dry, my hand was really soft. This oil in particular is organic with jojoba, pomegranate, lemongrass and vitamin E.

The Advanced Mineral moisturizer was by far my favorite. The consistency was creamy, but very light. It has a subtle smell to it that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. At the end of the day, my makeup hadn’t moved and even after I took it off my face was super soft. It has a bunch of good things in it like different butters and oils. Instead of using lotion after I get a shower, I simply put this on to keep my face moisturized.
