Top 5 Reasons To Choose + Use Natural Skincare

By Shawna Rocha

What are Natural Skincare Products?

Natural skincare products are classified as products whose ingredients can be found in nature and do not contain any synthetic chemicals. Natural skin care uses ingredients that are plant-derived such as herbs, roots, flowers and essential oils. They also use natural substances that are animal-derived such as beeswax, and minerals. These substances may be combined with various carrier agents, preservatives, surfactants, humectants and emulsifiers for use in skincare.

Natural skincare products are considered to be gentler and better for the skin. They do not cause sensitivity, have a higher efficacy rate, are fragrance free, produce long term results and are better for the environment.  To ensure the product is natural – beware of the following ingredients: sulfates, parabens, BHA, petrochemicals, DEA, MEA, and TEA, Propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, triclosan, synthetic dyes and talc.

What are Botanical Skincare Products?

A botanical ingredient is a component of a cosmetic or personal care product that originates from plants such as herbs, roots, flowers, fruits, leaves, nuts, berries, or seeds. Botanical ingredients, or plant-derived additives, are known for their healing and medicinal properties. Largely viewed as a means of preventative care, botanicals harness the power of plants to promote holistic health and wellness. Botanical extracts support the health, texture, and integrity of the skin, hair, and nails. The benefits of botanical skincare are to fight premature aging with rich antioxidants, prevent inflammation with anti-inflammatory properties, and promote hydration by creating a protective barrier. Botanical skincare products are healthy and effective alternatives in skincare.

What are Organic Skincare Products?

Organic products are derived from plants and other naturally occurring ingredients grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and other additives or chemicals. Organic products don’t have ingredients that are genetically modified, are free of petrochemicals and are not tested on animals. They are subjected to minimal processing so that the raw materials do not lose their natural properties after extraction and processing. Without harsh chemicals, organic skin care products are less likely to cause allergic reactions, inflammations, or irritations.

Brands Use Botanical + Organic Ingredients To Achieve Clinical-like Results

How It All Started

In the late 90’s when I started my skincare life, the industry was embracing science in a big way!  It was all about anti-aging and resurfacing!

Top 5 Benefits of Using Natural Skincare Products

1. No Skin Irritation

Skin irritation in the form of skin allergies, rashes, redness, itchiness, swelling, scaring and barrier damage can be the result of using skincare products that contain synthetic chemicals. Individuals with sensitive skin or who take medications can have sensitized skin and they are prone to these skin reactions. Natural skin care products are gentle on the skin and may prevent skin problems and irritations.

2. No Harmful Side Effects

Skin is the largest living, breathing organ on the body. Up to 60% of what is applied on the skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream and is circulated around the whole body. This can pose a great threat to the internal organs and body functions. Since natural skincare products do not contain harmful chemicals, they will not cause any adverse side effects.

3. Better Efficacy

Up to 95% of an organic skincare product’s contents are active ingredients. In contrast, in synthetic skincare products, active ingredients only make up 5 to 10% of its contents.  The best natural skincare products can heal or restore damaged skin cells to prevent hyperpigmentation, skin breakout, wrinkles, and fine lines.

4. Beneficial Nutrients

Natural skincare is packed with beneficial nutrients containing vitamins and compounds such as vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, resveratrol, and alpha-hydroxy acids that all help the body function at optimal levels. Common ingredients in natural moisturizing products include nut and fruit oils, and essential oils. Using natural skincare products ensures that the skin gets nutritional benefits from its ingredients.

5. Long Term Results

When eliminating toxins and synthetic chemicals from a skincare routine, the skin will start to respond positively to the natural nutrients supplied and become more balanced.  There are amazing benefits using (L) lactic acid, derived from natural glucose versus a chemical-based formaldehyde glycolic acid.  Both are considered alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), but one is derived organically and naturally so the skin reacts in a much better way offering immediate and long-term results.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose Natural Skincare Products

1. No Toxic Fragrances

Natural skincare products are completely devoid of any toxic fragrance. Chemically-based skincare products are comprised of artificial fragrances. Many individuals suffer from negative reactions due to artificial fragrances in the form of migraine or sinus problems. Natural and organic products do not carry any artificial fragrance.

2. Environmentally Friendly

During the manufacturing of chemically based products, most of the chemicals will end up in the air, water and washed down the drain. These harmful ingredients will end up in soil and waterways and can harm microorganisms, ecosystems and sea life. In Addition, the processes associated with mining of certain ingredients (aluminum, lead, etc.) for traditional skincare products produces a great deal of pollution, leaving a negative carbon footprint. Natural skincare products forego the use of such ingredients or mining processes, so they cause no harm to ecosystems or the environment.

3. Natural Alternative

Many health-conscious individuals are becoming more aware of the food we put into our bodies. The very same attitude should be taken when considering skincare products. Ingredients such as parabens, triclosan, and phthalates all have research showing they are harmful to our health. Choosing natural skincare products is a natural alternative for the health of the skin and body.

4. Cruelty Free

Many manufacturers in the beauty industry still conduct animal testing to ensure products are safe for human use. However, natural products do not need this testing because with organic ingredients the products are safe. Buying clean or organic skincare products, is supporting the move towards abolishing animal testing in the industry.

5.  Avoid Chemicals and Synthetics

Rates of illness and disease continue to rise and there are increasing studies showing the connection between illness and chemicals. Often this exposure to synthetic ingredients appears as skin irritation, chronic headaches, cancers, breathing disabilities, hormone disruption, etc. Avoiding these chemicals and synthetics by using natural products can help to prevent these negative health reactions.
