3 Benefits Of Retinol In Skin Care

Learn Our 3 Favorite Benefits Of Retinol In Skin Care

There are many benefits of retinol in skin care.  We’re not claiming that there’s only 3 benefits of retinol in skin care…they’re kind of amazing and do many things.  However, after doing a ton of research, sifting through scientific journals, we’ve uncovered 3 that we can put actual scientific data behind and that’s what we love!

The science behind our benefits of retinol in skin care.

We found the National Center for Biotechnology Information. They have a fantastic report on retinols that we reviewed to get some great facts!

REAL TALK

effects of retinol (ROL, vitamin A)”……

“Topical ROL shows remarkable anti-aging effects through three major types of skin cells: epidermal keratinocytes, dermal endothelial cells and fibroblasts. Topical ROL significantly increased epidermal thickness by stimulating keratinocytes proliferation and upregulation of c-Jun transcription factor. In addition to epidermal changes, topical ROL significantly improved dermal extracellular matrix (ECM) microenvironment; increasing dermal vascularity by stimulating endothelial cells proliferation and ECM production (type I collagen, fibronectin, and elastin) by activating dermal fibroblasts. Topical ROL also stimulates TGF-β/CTGF pathway, the major regulator of ECM homeostasis, and thus enriched the deposition of ECM in aged human skin in vivo. 0.4% topical ROL achieved similar results as seen with topical retinoic acid, the biologically active form of ROL, without causing noticeable signs of retinoid side effects.”  Read More

REAL TALK

Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation …….

First-line therapy typically consists of topical depigmenting agents in addition to photoprotection including a sunscreen. Topical tyrosinase inhibitors, such as hydroquinone, azelaic acid, kojic acid, arbutin, and certain licorice extracts, can effectively lighten areas of hypermelanosis. Other depigmenting agents include retinoids.….”  Read More

A Breakdown Of The Science 3 Benefits of Retinol In Skin Care.

Basically, all that, “Real Talk”,  is science talk that means……

“Retinols improve skin cell production, improve collagen in the skin and can be used as a depigmenting agent.”

So how do we break that down into 3 deliciously tangible benefits of retinol in skin care for acne and hyperpigmenation and as tool in anti-aging?  The beauty is that many times the benefits can overlap.

Benefit #1

llStimulating Keratinocytes Proliferation or Improved Cellular Turnover!

This is an amazing benefit for acne clients and clients who have hyperpigmentation as well as any clients that are looking to “age beautifully.”

Acne
Clogged pores are a huge issue with acneic skin.  One of the benefits of retinol in skin care for acneic clients is that it helps turn over skin cells more regularly which reduces clogged pores.

Hyperpigmentation
One key factor in treating hyperpigmentation is to remove the old, pigmented skin cells.  This is achieved much faster with an increase in cellular turnover.

Anti-Aging
Clients who are trying to age beautifully need a little help with cellular turnover.  As we age, cell production slows down, which leaves skin cells on the surface of the skin longer, leaving it to appear dull and lifeless.  Slower cellular turn over also increases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  With increased cellular turnover, new, younger looking skin is brought the surface faster.

Benefit #2

ECM production (type I collagen, fibronectin, and elastin) by activating dermal fibroblasts.

or

 Improve collagen in the skin.

Anti-Aging
After a certain age, somewhere in the 30’s-ish, collagen production starts to   s    l   o    w  down.    It’s sad, but that once firm, smooth skin starts to show the signs of aging with fine lines.  Skin starts to sag and over time the face can start to look deflated.   One of the great benefits of retinol in skin care is that they can help to improve collagen in the skin, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines.

Benefit #3

Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation ……. depigmenting agents include retinoids.

or

Helps to lighten dark spots.

Acne
Acne breakouts can leave little dark spots on the skin.  One of the benefits of retinol in skin care is that regular use can help to lighten dark spots left behind after acne breakouts.

Hyperpigmenation
Clients who experience hyperpigmentation can use retinols to help lighten the dark spots.

Anti-Aging
Another part of the aging process is years of sun exposure and environmental damage begin to come to the surface.  Retinols can help to lighten this damage with regular use.
